Shi/Ma Award for Excellence in Biomedical Research

The Shi/Ma Award for Excellence in Biomedical Research was established by Dr. Honglan Shi (research professor emeritus of chemistry at S&T) and her husband Dr. Yinfa Ma (Curators Distinguished professor emeritus of chemistry, former associate dean for research, external relations in CASE, and director of Center for Biomedical Research) under the following terms:

  1. Students must be enrolled in a degree program in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education and actively participate in biomedical research. The award shall be given to at least one undergraduate student and one graduate student annually.
  2. Each student selected will receive a $1,000 award for his/her outstanding accomplishment in biomedical research.
  3. Preference will be given to the student(s) participating in research in the Center for Biomedical Research.

This award will start in 2024. To apply, students should submit a two-page essay that describes their research and includes the name of their faculty advisor. The faculty advisor should also provide a recommendation letter. To apply, students should email the essay and recommendation letter with the subject “Shi/Ma Research Awards” to Dr. Yue-Wern Huang (associate dean for research and external relations in CASE) by April 1st each year.

Award recipients will be known as “Shi/Ma Outstanding Biomedical Research Award.”
